For this class prompt, we were encouraged to paint from a photograph that required preserving areas of paper as pure white highlights. 

I selected my photograph (below) to practice mixing vibrant neutrals in addition to using masking fluid to preserve highlights. I used sketches and scrap paper to aid the process. Halfway through, I was unsatisfied with the lack of contrast; to remedy this, I paired the original photo with numbers on a grayscale value finder, and painted in the dark rocks as an anchoring shade. I was then able to balance the rest of the painting between the rocks and the highlights in the clouds.
